FSM has partnered with Youth Works to give students an opportunity to participate in a week of service in an American Indian community in Martin, SD. Martin sits between 2 large reservations and like many other Native American regions today, struggle with poverty and unemployment. We have the unique opportunity continue to bring peace and healing between the 2 reservations and the townspeople of Martin.

Youth Works is a missions organization leading trips across the globe. Youth Works focus on low income communities in drastic need of home repair. They believe that the love of Christ is shown through service, whether that’s putting a fresh coat of paint on the outside of a house or holding a kids club where area children can come and play, take part in crafts, and be loved on. “While it is important to be challenged in our ministry work, we believe the most important thing we can do is to live out the love of Christ with all whom we meet.”

On this mission trip, our High School and Middle School students will provide encouragement and hope to the local residents by focusing on two areas of ministry; work projects and kid’s club. The students will serve by leading a Kids Club program, which is a wonderful hands-on program consisting of games, crafts, skits, songs, and lessons that teach the children about Jesus. Second we will serve by working on small home improvement projects such as painting and minor repairs. Nearly 30% of Martin’s population live below the poverty line; our hands and feet are needed!

The racial makeup of the city is 53% white and 45% Native American. The city’s position between 2 reservations has produced racial tensions between the Martin residents and the Native American Tribes, but the people of these communities are now making efforts to be more sensitive to one another.
